Sky Stream Review: The Puck, the Packages and the Playlist

Sky Stream is the whole Sky proposition — the channels, the sport, the interface — delivered through a puck the size of a beer mat over your ordinary broadband. No dish, no engineer, no holes in the wall. It is the best television product sold in Britain, and the compromises it asks for are real but narrower than you might expect.

The short answer

  • No dish, no aerial, no engineer — the puck plugs into HDMI and works.
  • The interface is comfortably the best in UK television.
  • There is no hard disk. Playlist is a cloud shortcut, not a recording.
  • Usually a 24-month term, and the price steps up partway through.

Sky spent three decades building a business around a dish bolted to the side of your house. Sky Stream is the admission that this is no longer necessary — and, more importantly, that for a large slice of the country it was never possible. Flats with no freeholder permission, listed buildings, rented properties, north-facing walls: millions of British homes simply could not have Sky.

Stream removes that barrier entirely. You order it online, a small puck arrives in the post, you plug it into an HDMI port and connect it to your Wi-Fi. Ten minutes later you have Sky. There is no visit, no installation and nothing attached to the building.

This Sky Stream review is based on running it as our main television for a year, alongside a Sky Q box in the same house for comparison, on a 67 Mbps line. This is what it is actually like to live with — including the one limitation that sends a proportion of households back to a dish.

What is Sky Stream?

Sky Stream is Sky’s full television service delivered entirely over the internet. It uses the same content rights, the same channel line-up and the same apps as satellite Sky. The only thing that changes is the pipe.

Against the other big pay-TV platform, Sky vs Virgin covers the broadband tie that usually decides it. It shares its operating system with our Sky Glass review, which is a television with the same software built in. If you have seen Glass, you have seen Stream — the difference is that Stream lets you keep the television you already own, which for most people is the better deal. Glass and Stream compared directly settles which of the two suits your house.

What is the Sky Stream puck?

The small box that brings Sky to a television you already own — about the size of a coaster, with just three sockets and no hard disk. Sky calls it a puck, most people call it the Stream box, and there is only the one model.

The Sky Stream puck is a matte black square roughly 11 cm on each side and 3 cm thick. It has an HDMI output, an Ethernet port, a USB-C power input and nothing else. There is no optical audio out, no card slot and no hard disk. It disappears behind a television completely.

Build quality is good — it feels like a Sky product rather than a generic box — and it runs cool enough to sit in a cabinet without ventilation concerns. In a year of daily use ours has never needed a manual restart, which is more than we can say for most streaming hardware.

Wired or wireless

The puck supports dual-band Wi-Fi and works acceptably on 5 GHz within reasonable range. But the Ethernet port is there for a reason, and using it is the single best thing you can do for the experience. Wired, a 4K stream starts almost instantly and never wavers. On 2.4 GHz through two internal walls, it will find the bottom of the bitrate ladder and stay there.

The reasoning behind that is set out properly in our explainer on how IPTV works, but the practical advice is simply: run a cable if you possibly can.

The Sky Stream remote

Small, light, and rather good. It is a considerable simplification of the old Sky Q remote — a directional pad, a handful of shortcut buttons, volume, and a microphone key for voice search. It pairs over Bluetooth rather than infrared, so it does not need line of sight and works through a cabinet door.

Voice search is genuinely useful here, which is not something we say often. Asking for a programme by name, an actor, or "Premier League" reliably lands in the right place, and it is dramatically faster than typing on an on-screen keyboard. There is a "find my remote" chime triggered from the puck, which sounds like a gimmick until the first time it saves you turning the sofa over.

How much does Sky Stream cost?

Sky Stream packages work as a base package plus optional content packs, and almost nobody ends up on the base package alone. The summary below covers Stream specifically; for the full tier-by-tier breakdown across every delivery method, see our guide to what each Sky tier actually costs.

PackApprox. monthlyWhat it adds
Sky Essential TV~£15The base. Sky Atlantic, Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Sky Crime, Sky Documentaries, Sky News, plus the Freeview channels and Netflix with adverts.
Sky Ultimate TV~£22Essential plus a larger box-set library and an upgraded Netflix tier.
Sky Sports~£31All of Sky Sports: Premier League and EFL football, F1, cricket and golf.
Sky Cinema~£13Sky Cinema channels and around 1,000 films on demand.
Sky Kids~£6Dedicated children’s channels and on-demand.
UHD & Dolby Atmos~£64K resolution and Atmos audio. Not included by default.
Whole Home / extra puck~£6 eachAdditional rooms.
Indicative pricing checked August 2026. Sky discounts heavily for new customers and the rate steps up partway through the term.

A realistic household wanting sport, films and 4K lands somewhere around £65 a month once the introductory discount expires. That is a lot of money, and it is the strongest argument for NOW if your viewing is seasonal rather than constant.

Can you record on Sky Stream?

No — and this is the single biggest behavioural change for anyone coming from Sky+ or Sky Q. There is no hard disk in the puck and nothing is stored in your house.

What replaces it is Playlist. Pressing the record-shaped button adds a programme to a personal list, and Sky then makes it available to stream on demand. Functionally it feels similar: you press a button, the thing appears in your list, you watch it later.

Where the difference bites

Sky Q (hard disk)Sky Stream (Playlist)
Stored whereIn your houseIn Sky’s cloud
CapacityFixed by disk sizeEffectively unlimited
Available if broadband failsYesNo
Kept indefinitelyYes, until you delete itOnly while Sky holds the rights
Skip advertsYes, fast-forwardDepends on the on-demand version
Series linkYesYes
Available before you added itNoOften yes — much is already on demand

Two consequences matter in practice. The first is that Playlist content can disappear. If Sky’s licence for a film expires, it leaves your Playlist, which a hard-disk recording never would. For most television this is irrelevant; for films you were saving, it occasionally stings.

The second is the flip side, and it is genuinely better than recording: a great deal of content is already available on demand whether or not you remembered to set anything. Missing the start of a series is no longer a problem to be solved in advance.

If keeping permanent copies matters to you — and for some households it genuinely does — Sky Q, or EE TV with its Box Pro hard disk, are the alternatives.

A glowing cloud connected to a streaming puck by threads of light
There is no hard disk in the puck. The Playlist lives in the cloud.

What is the Sky Stream interface like?

The best of any television platform sold in Britain, and it is not especially close. You stop having to remember which app a programme lives in, because Stream finds it wherever it is and opens it directly.

This is where Sky Stream pulls decisively ahead of everything else sold in Britain, and it is difficult to overstate the gap.

The home screen is organised by intent rather than by source. Rails for continuing, for sport, for children, for what is on now. Crucially, search and browsing span every app you have — search for a title and Stream tells you it is on Netflix, or Discovery+, or a Sky channel, and takes you straight there. You stop thinking about which app anything lives in, which is the thing every other platform in Britain fails at.

The live channel guide is conventional and good. Sport gets proper treatment, with fixtures surfaced ahead of time and a straightforward route from a match to the channel carrying it — the exact thing NOW handles poorly.

Apps

Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Discovery+, Apple TV+, iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5, Paramount+ and more, all integrated into the same search and the same rails rather than bolted on as separate tiles. Netflix is billed through Sky, which is convenient if you want one bill and mildly annoying if you already have an account.

The library is narrower than a Fire TV Stick’s — this is a curated television platform, not an open app store. For the vast majority of households that is a feature rather than a limitation, but if you rely on something niche, check before switching.

How much broadband does Sky Stream need?

With the UHD add-on and a wired connection, Sky Stream looks excellent. 4K HDR content is sharp and stable, Dolby Atmos works properly through a supporting soundbar, and adaptive bitrate rarely has to intervene on a decent line.

The bandwidth arithmetic is the thing to plan for in a multi-puck household. Three rooms streaming 4K simultaneously wants something close to 90 Mbps of genuinely available throughput. On a 60 Mbps line that will work, but the pucks will negotiate downwards and you will be watching HD without being told — how much speed a stream actually needs works through that arithmetic for every UK platform.

Side by side with a dish in the same house, the Stream picture of a live match arrives around half a minute later. If someone in the next room is watching the dish, you will hear the goal before you see it.

Is Sky Stream a contract?

Sky Stream is usually sold on a 24-month term. Sky has at times offered a 31-day rolling option at a higher monthly rate, and its availability comes and goes — it is worth asking for, because it changes the calculation considerably.

On a standard term, three things are worth knowing before signing.

  1. The price steps up. Introductory rates typically run 12 or 18 months, then increase to standard. The increase is contractual. Diarise the date.
  2. Content packs can usually be changed mid-term. Adding and removing Sports or Cinema is generally more flexible than the base contract, so you can trim during quiet months. Confirm the specifics for your contract.
  3. Cancelling early means an exit fee, calculated from the months remaining. There is no way around this, which is precisely why NOW exists.

If you are weighing Stream against Sky’s satellite service, we have a dedicated comparison covering the hardware, recording and contract differences: Sky Stream vs Sky Q. And if you have decided to leave Sky altogether, our guide to cancelling Sky TV covers the 31-day notice rule and what the retention team can actually offer.

What are the most common Sky Stream problems?

A year of daily use turned up a short and consistent list. Sky Stream is among the more reliable platforms we have tested, and almost everything below is resolved in under a minute.

ProblemCauseFix
Remote stops respondingBluetooth pairing dropped, usually after a power cutHold the back and shortcut buttons together for a few seconds to re-pair.
Content plays in HD, not 4KNo UHD add-on, or insufficient bandwidthCheck the add-on is active, then wire the puck. 4K needs ~30 Mbps sustained.

Apps missing that you expectedCurated platform, not an open app storeCheck availability before switching. A Fire TV Stick on another input covers gaps.

The last row is worth planning for rather than discovering. Sky Stream is a curated platform, and while the major services are all present, it is not an app store. If you depend on something unusual, verify it is there first.

The single-payment alternative to a Sky Stream contract

Sky Stream is an eighteen-month commitment with a price that has risen in each of the last three years. The plans below are the opposite arrangement: one payment, a fixed term, and no renewal. Both tiers are shown because Sky Stream is bought for its channels and its sport — IPTV 4K Ultra covers both in 4K HDR, and IPTV 8K Ultra Max carries a wider list again.

The comparison that matters is total cost over the contract you would otherwise sign. A loaded Sky Stream package across eighteen months lands somewhere north of a thousand pounds; the twenty-four-month term above is £79.99 in total. Is Sky Stream worth it? Our verdict

Our verdict

Sky Stream

8.7/10

The best television product in Britain, and the clearest demonstration of what IPTV makes possible — Sky, in any home, in ten minutes, with nothing attached to the building. The interface alone justifies it over the alternatives. What you pay for that is a genuine 24-month commitment and the loss of local recordings, and neither is a small thing.

What works

  • By some distance the best interface in UK television.
  • Full Sky line-up with real 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos.
  • Works in any home — no dish, no aerial, no engineer.
  • Cross-app search that actually works.
  • Excellent voice remote and rock-solid hardware.

What doesn’t

  • Typically a 24-month minimum term with an exit fee.
  • No hard disk — Playlist content can expire.
  • 4K is a paid add-on, not included.
  • Around £65 a month once fully loaded and off the intro rate.
  • Every room competes for the same broadband line.

Best for: Households that want the complete Sky experience, have decent broadband and are staying put. If you will not keep it all year, NOW gets you most of the content with none of the commitment.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sky Stream?

Sky’s full television service delivered over broadband through a small puck, rather than through a satellite dish. It carries the same channels, sport and apps as satellite Sky, needs no installation, and works in any home with a decent internet connection and a spare HDMI port.

Can you record on Sky Stream?

Not in the traditional sense — there is no hard disk. Pressing the record button adds a programme to your cloud Playlist, which Sky then makes available on demand. It behaves similarly day to day, but content can leave your Playlist if Sky’s rights expire, and nothing is available if your broadband is down.

Does Sky Stream need a dish?

No. It works entirely over your broadband connection. There is no dish, no aerial and no engineer visit — the puck arrives by post and plugs into an HDMI port. This is the main reason it exists.

How much does Sky Stream cost?

Sky Essential TV starts around £15 a month. Adding Sky Sports (~£31), Sky Cinema (~£13) and the UHD add-on (~£6) takes a fully loaded package to roughly £65 once the introductory discount ends. Extra pucks for other rooms are about £6 each per month.

Does Sky Stream do 4K?

Yes, but not by default. Genuine 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos requires the separate UHD add-on at around £6 a month. Without it the puck streams in HD, which surprises a lot of people who bought a 4K television for it.

What internet speed do I need for Sky Stream?

Around 30 Mbps per 4K stream. A single-puck household is comfortable on 40 Mbps; three pucks streaming 4K at once wants closer to 90 Mbps of genuinely available throughput. A wired Ethernet connection to each puck matters more than headline speed.

Is Sky Stream the same as Sky Glass?

They run identical software. Sky Glass is a television with the platform built in; Sky Stream is a puck that adds the platform to a television you already own. Unless you were replacing your set anyway, Stream is the better value of the two.

Is the Sky Stream box the same as the puck?

Yes. Sky markets it as a puck and most customers call it a Sky Stream box, but there is only one device — a matte black square about 11 cm across that plugs into an HDMI port. There is no larger set-top variant, and nothing else to choose between.

Why has my Sky Stream remote stopped working?

Almost always a dropped Bluetooth pairing, which typically happens after a power cut. Hold the back and shortcut buttons together for a few seconds to re-pair it. If that fails, change the batteries before assuming the remote is faulty — low batteries cause intermittent response long before the remote dies completely.

Can I cancel Sky Stream at any time?

Not on the standard 24-month contract — cancelling early incurs an exit fee based on the months remaining. Sky has periodically offered a 31-day rolling option at a higher monthly rate, so it is worth asking. For genuine contract-free viewing, NOW is the alternative.
