Sky Remote Not Working? How to Pair, Reset and Fix It

A Sky Q remote that has stopped responding is almost never broken. It has lost its Bluetooth pairing with the box, and holding two buttons together for a few seconds restores it. The fixes below are ordered by how often they solve the problem, followed by the signs that the box, not the remote, is at fault.

The short answer

  • Hold 1 and 3 together until the light flashes — this fixes most cases.
  • Swap in new batteries before anything else — weak ones cause baffling on-off faults.
  • The Sky Q app on your phone works as a remote in the meantime.
  • If the box has no lights, the problem is the box and not the remote.

The Sky Q remote talks to the box over Bluetooth rather than infrared. That is why it works from another room, through a cabinet door, and without being pointed at anything — and it is also why it fails in a way old remotes never did.

A Bluetooth remote holds a stored pairing with a specific box. When that pairing is lost — after a power cut, a software update or a box restart — the remote looks completely dead even though nothing is wrong with it. Restoring the pairing takes about five seconds once you know the sequence.

Work down this page and stop at the first thing that works. Most people will not get past step two.

Sky remote not working? Start with the batteries

It sounds too obvious, and it is still the correct first step. A Sky Q remote on weakening batteries rarely just goes dead — it misbehaves in patchy, confusing ways that people blame on the box.

Because the remote maintains a Bluetooth connection rather than flashing an infrared LED, it needs meaningfully more current. As voltage drops it retains enough power to look alive — the light still blinks — but not enough to hold a reliable link. The symptoms are intermittent: it works sometimes, drops mid-session, or responds to some presses and not others.

While the cover is off, check the contacts for white or green residue from a leaked cell. Crusty deposits from a leaking battery can usually be cleaned off with a cotton bud dipped in a little white vinegar; dry the contacts completely before fitting new cells.

How do you pair a Sky Q remote?

Hold 1 and 3 together until the light on the remote flashes twice — that fixes the large majority of cases and takes a few seconds. Stand near the box rather than across the room, because pairing is more range-sensitive than normal operation, and hold the keys rather than tapping them.

This is the fix for the large majority of cases and takes a few seconds.

With the Sky Q box switched on and the television showing the Sky input:

  1. Get within a couple of metres of the box

Pairing is more range-sensitive than normal operation. Stand near the box rather than across the room, with nothing metal directly between you.

  2. Hold buttons 1 and 3 together

Press and hold both number keys at the same time. Keep holding — do not tap them. Release when the light on the remote flashes twice.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompt

The box should display a pairing message. Follow whatever it asks. If Sky’s on-screen instructions differ from this page, follow the screen — Sky has shipped several remote generations and the box knows which one it is talking to.

  4. Test with the directional pad

Move up and down rather than pressing Select. If the highlight moves, you are done.

If nothing happens, try once more before moving on. The first attempt sometimes fails for no reason anyone has pinned down; a second usually works, so it is worth the extra few seconds.

Hold 1 and 3. The box does the rest.

Does restarting the Sky Q box fix the remote?

Often, yes — if re-pairing failed, the Bluetooth stack on the box may be the problem rather than the remote. Pull the plug at the socket rather than using standby, which leaves the box powered and is the commonest reason people report that restarting did not help. Wait a minute before switching back on.

When pairing fails, the fault is often on the box’s side — its Bluetooth connection gets stuck, and only a genuine power cycle frees it. Do this before resetting the remote, because a remote reset only helps once the box itself is responding.

  1. Switch off at the mains

Use the plug socket, not standby. A Sky Q box in standby is still running, so pressing the power button restarts nothing — and that is why so many people say a restart made no difference.

  2. Wait a full 60 seconds

A quick off-and-on leaves enough charge inside that the box’s Bluetooth never properly restarts. A minute is enough.

  3. Power back on and wait for it to boot

A Sky Q box takes several minutes to come back fully — considerably longer than a streaming stick. Wait for the picture before touching anything.

  4. Try the 1 and 3 hold again

With a freshly booted box, pairing frequently succeeds where it failed before.

How do you reset Sky Q remote pairing?

Only after pairing and a proper restart have both failed. Resetting the remote wipes its memory of the box so the next pairing starts from nothing, and several flashes of its light confirm it worked. Never reset the box itself for a remote problem — that deletes your recordings and fixes nothing.

If it is still unresponsive, this clears the remote’s stored state entirely and forces a clean pairing.

  1. Hold 1 and 3 until the light flashes twice

The same starting point as pairing.

  2. Press 7, then 9

The light should flash several times to confirm the reset. Again — if the box shows different on-screen guidance for your remote generation, follow the screen.

  3. Remove the batteries for 30 seconds

This clears any remaining state held in the remote.

  4. Refit the batteries and pair again

Hold 1 and 3 until the light flashes twice, and follow the on-screen prompt.

Can you use your phone as a Sky remote?

Yes. The Sky Q app on your phone works as a full remote over your home Wi-Fi, which is worth setting up while you wait for fresh batteries or work through the pairing steps. Both the phone and the box need to be on the same network.

The Sky app includes a remote control function, which is a genuinely useful stopgap while you wait for batteries or a replacement.

  1. Install the Sky app

Free on both the App Store and Google Play.

  2. Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi as the box

Essential — the app finds the box over your home network, not over Bluetooth. Both must be on the same network.

  3. Sign in with your Sky account

The account the box is registered to.

  4. Open the remote function and select your box

It should appear automatically once both devices are on the same network.

The limitation is that it needs the box already connected to your network. If the box is offline the app has nothing to talk to, and it was never able to change your television’s volume or switch it off in any case.

Is it the remote, or is the Sky Q box not working?

The lights on the box decide it. If the box has no lights at all, the problem is the box and not the remote, and none of the pairing steps will help. If the box is lit and responds to the Sky Q app on your phone, the remote is the fault.

Worth establishing early, because it changes what you should be doing entirely. The front panel of the box is the quickest tell.

The middle rows are the useful test. If the Sky app controls the box perfectly, the box, its network connection and its software are all fine — and the fault is unambiguously the remote.

What about the Sky Q booster?

The Sky Q Booster strengthens the wireless link to Mini boxes in far-off rooms, so it cannot help a remote that has stopped responding. If a Mini box in another room has lost its picture while the main box is fine, the Booster or the wireless link between them is the thing to investigate, not remote pairing.

Why a Sky remote not working is usually Bluetooth, not hardware

This is why habits from older Sky remotes — aiming at the box, wiping the sensor window — achieve nothing on Sky Q, which does not need line of sight at all. Streaming sticks behave the same way: a Firestick remote that has stopped responding is the same Bluetooth problem with its own button combination.

An infrared remote is a one-way torch. It flashes a coded pattern of light and a receiver decodes it. There is no relationship between the two devices beyond line of sight, so there is nothing to lose and a dead infrared remote is genuinely dead.

A Bluetooth remote maintains a bonded pairing: both ends store a shared key and an address for the other. That is what allows two-way communication — which is how voice search works and how the box can tell the remote is nearby. The cost is that the bond can break.

The same architecture, and the same failure mode, applies to the what Sky Stream actually costs and our Sky Glass review remotes, and to the Fire TV Stick remote — which is why all of them are fixed by re-pairing rather than by new batteries alone.

Sky Q remote pairing is fine — so what else could it be?

A handful of symptoms look like a remote fault but have entirely different causes. Recognising them saves you resetting things that were never broken. A television that is slow to respond to any remote is a different problem again — what a smart TV is doing in the background covers that side.

Two remotes in the house interfereBoth paired to the same boxNormal — a box holds several pairings. Keep them in different rooms.

The lag case is the one most often misdiagnosed. A remote that responds but slowly is almost never a remote problem — it means the box is busy or unwell, and no amount of re-pairing will change it.

A note on television control

Sky Q remotes can control your television’s volume and standby, but that part usually works over infrared or HDMI-CEC rather than Bluetooth. So it genuinely does need line of sight to the television, even though the Sky functions do not. If everything works except volume, this is almost always why.

When the Sky remote is not working because it is broken

If fresh batteries, re-pairing, a box restart and a full remote reset have all failed, the remote itself has probably died. Physical failure is uncommon but drops, spills and battery corrosion all happen.

  • Sky sells replacements directly, and they are typically cheaper through your Sky account than through third parties.
  • Third-party Sky Q remotes exist and are cheaper, but many are infrared-only — which means no voice search and no operation from another room.
  • A spare from another Sky Q box will pair using the same 1 and 3 sequence.
  • The Sky app remains free and is a permanent fallback worth keeping installed.

If the box itself is also showing its age — slow menus, failed recordings, noisy disk — it may be worth talking to Sky about moving to Sky Stream or Sky Glass, both of which drop the dish entirely. Our Sky Stream vs Sky Q comparison covers what you gain and lose in that move, and it is not all upside — you lose the hard disk.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Sky remote not working all of a sudden?

Nine times in ten a dropped Bluetooth pairing, usually after a power cut. Hold 1 and 3 together until the light flashes to re-pair. If that fails, change the batteries before assuming a fault — a Sky remote not working intermittently is far more often low power than broken hardware.

How do I pair Sky Q remote handsets after a reset?

Hold 1 and 3 together on the remote until the light flashes twice, with the box switched on and in the same room. That is the whole pair Sky Q remote sequence. If the box has just been restarted, give it a minute to finish booting before trying.

Is it the remote, or is my Sky Q box not working?

Test with the buttons on the box itself. If those respond, the box is fine and it is the remote. If nothing responds at all, a Sky Q box not working needs a restart at the mains rather than any amount of re-pairing.

How long do Sky Q remote batteries last?

Somewhere between four and eight months on ordinary alkaline AAAs, and less in a house that uses voice search a lot. The Sky Q remote stays connected to the box all the time rather than firing a signal only when pressed, which is why it gets through batteries far faster than the Sky+ remote before it.

Why does my Sky Q remote control the box but not the TV volume?

Television control usually works over infrared or HDMI-CEC rather than Bluetooth, so that part genuinely needs line of sight to the television even though the Sky functions do not. Run the TV setup in Sky Q settings and enable HDMI-CEC on the television itself.

How do I pair a Sky Q remote?

Hold buttons 1 and 3 together until the light on the remote flashes twice, then follow the on-screen prompt from the box. Stand within a couple of metres while you do it. The same sequence pairs a new remote or re-pairs one that has stopped responding.

Why is my Sky Q remote not working?

Usually the remote has simply lost its link to the box, and holding 1 and 3 until the light flashes restores it. Tired batteries come a close second: a Sky Q remote can keep blinking long after it has stopped talking to the box reliably, so fit new ones before trying anything cleverer.

How do I reset a Sky Q remote?

Hold 1 and 3 until the light flashes twice, then press 7 followed by 9 — the light should flash several times to confirm. Remove the batteries for thirty seconds, refit them, then pair again with the 1 and 3 hold. Follow any on-screen guidance from the box in preference to this.

Does a Sky Q remote need line of sight?

No. It uses Bluetooth, so it works through a cabinet door and from another room without being pointed at the box. That is also why it can lose its pairing, which an infrared remote never does.

Can I use my phone as a Sky Q remote?

Yes. The free Sky app includes a remote control function. Both the phone and the Sky Q box must be on the same Wi-Fi network, since it works over your home network rather than Bluetooth. It cannot control your television’s volume or power.

How do I know if it is the remote or the Sky Q box?

Check the front panel. If the box has normal lights and responds to the Sky app or to buttons on the box itself, the fault is the remote. If the box has no lights at all, it is a power or box problem and no amount of remote pairing will help.

Should I factory reset my Sky Q box to fix the remote?

No. A full box reset wipes your recordings, settings and preferences and does not reset the remote, which is a separate Bluetooth device. Use the remote reset sequence instead — hold 1 and 3, then press 7 and 9.

What is a Sky Q Booster for?

It is a signal booster for the Minis in other rooms, and has no bearing on the remote at all. It has nothing to do with the remote. If a Mini box has lost its picture while the main box works, that is the Booster or the wireless link, not remote pairing.
